Doctors, when presented with these physical symptoms, will run a few tests before making a diagnosis and prescribe treatments to help the patient, not knowing or understanding that the symptoms are hiding a more insidious disease. A lot of people get themselves checked only because they are suffering from physical symptoms without telling their doctors that they have depressive episodes.

These are one of the first symptoms that can occur with depression. Problems can be intensified to migraine-like intensity in someone who is suffering from depression. It can also be reoccurring and there are instances when it can affect a person’s daily routine.

Depression can cause chest pains, which for most people, is a sign of an impending heart attack. Some people might think it has something to do with their diet, lack of exercise and more, they do not usually think it has something to do with their mental state.

3. Sleep Disorders

People who suffer from depression can have trouble getting some sleep, staying asleep, or the desire to most of the day. This is because some people feel as if sleep can help them escape from the real world.

The majority of people who suffer from depression also suffer from perpetual exhaustion. This can relate to sleep disorders, and it doesn’t seem to matter how much sleep they get because they will still feel exhausted when they wake up.

Depression can intensify the pain and discomfort of people who are already suffering from these conditions. Some people may think it is because of the early signs of aging, but the body can be tensed too if the mind is not functioning well.

7. Appetite and Weight Issues

People with depression can experience either a lack of appetite or intense cravings for certain foods. Either weight gain or weight loss can lead to this.

Another issue for people who suffer from more severe forms of depression may be even harder to diagnose because severe depression can cause delusions and hallucinations. This is why there are a lot of stages and types of depression.

It is also easier for many people to accept the physical symptoms of depression than any mental symptoms. Some many people and cultures place a social stigma on anyone with a mental illness. It is, therefore, more comfortable to accept and treat a more benign physical ailment than to seek professional mental help.

What many people do not understand is that with the successful treatment of the underlying depression, either with the help of therapy or medication, they can get better. Unfortunately treating the physical symptoms will do nothing for actual depression but ease the symptoms for a bit. Without proper treatment, the depression will generally continue to get worse. It is, therefore, of the utmost importance to treat the depression itself. People with depression may feel better with the help of medication for their physical symptoms, but it will not treat them completely.
